Challenge
Classic ‘Brown Shingle’ Berkeley Craftsman that has, like so many Oakland / Berkeley homes, experienced a series of weird remodels and additions in the back half over the years. Clean up the rear half of the home, add a kitchen & dining room space that is accessible to the beautiful rear yard. Upstairs configure the floor plan, add a bedroom and full bath.
Solution
Business in the front, party in the back. This home was chopped in half and fully rebuilt from the ground up. We lowered the ground floor plane so it no longer required a full staircase to access the rear yard and allowed for a taller volume in the open kitchen and dining spaces. The material selection blends the historic character of the home with a more contemporary layout.
